About Cox Market Specialty Grocery Store
Our Family Serving Yours
Founded by Rose and Walter Cox, Cox Market is still owned, managed, and staffed by the Cox family. As Mon City has grown and changed, so has Cox Market. But throughout the years, the Cox commitment to quality and personal service has never wavered, and the philosophy of family serving family is what has kept us in business for over 60 years.
Founded in 1949
Rose and Walter Cox went into business in 1949 with a food and dairy bar that focused on serving great, fresh food to their neighbors. In 1963, their son, Tom Cox, left his teaching job to join the family business alongside his wife, Esther. They changed the name to Cox Grocery and added the now-famous meat counter; offering butcher-shop quality and service along with traditional grocery offerings.
Steve and Peggy Cox are the current owners of Cox market, and are the third generation of Coxes to carry on the family business. Steve joined the store immediately after graduating from Washington and Jefferson, and brought his wife Peggy on board.
All three of their children, Josh, Shane and Kaitlyn, grew up in the store. Josh and Kaitlyn have now joined the staff on a full-time basis, but it’s not uncommon to see Shane jump in and help if he is needed. After all these years, the Cox Family is still devoted to providing a grocery store that serves your needs.
An Exceptional Staff
The Cox Market commitment to service extends to our phenomenal staff. Cox Market is home to experienced, highly skilled workers, many of whom have been working at the store their entire careers. They too are truly a part of the Cox family.
Bonnie Frankovich, Darlene Garrick, and Jan McCorkle are permanent fixtures in the store. Well maybe not permanent, but between the three they have at least 90 years of service. We know most of our customers by name and treat everyone who shops at Cox Market as though they too, are part of the family.
The feeling of family and commitment to community is what gives Cox Market that special home town feel. Every time you visit, you will see the same faces. You’ll learn each other’s names, get to know each other, and you’ll soon discover the staff will know what you want to order even before they say “hello”. When was the last time you received that kind of personal service at a big box grocery store?
Cox Market is committed to providing home-style service at great prices, and that commitment has shone through for the last six decades.
